The DX

A DX-White Lady Custom in maple. This customer has substituted my "birds" fingerboard pattern for the more elaborate "floral" inlays and used an alternate "naked lady" headstock inlay.

For a more complete listing of possible inlay patterns, please contact me directly and I will either e-mail copies or send snail mail hardcopies to you. I have a collection of hundreds of patterns from every instrument I have built or worked on. I also draw patterns to order when nothing else will do. In addition, if you are artistic and wish to have me cut pearl to your pattern, I am happy to do so. I hand cut, inlay, and engrave every inlay.

The DX is the Greven version of a Gibson-J-200 style guitar. Unlike the J-200, my DX is only 4 1/4 inches deep while retaining the full 17 inch wide lower bout. This combination of large top surface and relatively shallow body gives this guitar a very big bass response without the typical "blowing over a Coke bottle" sound of air moving in and out of the soundhole that deeper boxes so often have.

Mary Chapin Carpenter chose the DX in curly maple for her number 2 Greven (her number 1 is a maple J-Herringbone Deluxe) to keep in drop tunings. She loves both of her guitars, but has wisely chosen different roles for them on stage.

Closup of another style of Dragon for a headstock, this one on a Herringbone Deluxe Custom.
